The ugly shoe trend that swept the Spring 2018 runways is continuing to gain traction. Bella Hadid and Elsa Hosk have been wearing those gargantuan, grandpa-style sneakers from Balenciaga in the wild, and Kendall Jenner was recently seen sporting a similar style from Yeezy. The idea isn’t limited to athletic wear. Today, Chloë Sevigny stepped out in Maison Margiela Tabi-toe boots—one of the original styles to toe the line between cool and cringe-worthy.
From a fashion perspective, the look dates back to Margiela’s debut collection in 1988 when the designer sent out shoes inspired by heavy-duty “Tabi” boots worn by outdoor workers in Japan during the 15th century. Since then, the talon-like detail has become a quirky house signature. Sevigny, for one, has been wearing the look for years, and was famously photographed by Mark Borthwick in black Tabi boots and socks on the beach in the early aughts. READ MORE
