I Found This This Morning By An Anonymous and felt I should share with you.
Pls note this is NOT one of those 'copied as received' articles. It is written by me as i feel the pain of this family going through the loss of a dear one.
It is a long write up but I assure you, you will not regret reading it.
A friend's brother, 49years old, died suddenly in the US this month, after a trip from Nigeria. He had complained about a pain on his leg to his wife on phone only, shortly after arrival in Nigeria but he didn't really think seriously about this pain. He got back to the US, the pain became more severe and he went into the hospital. The doctor prescribed analgesics and muscle relaxant and he went about his daily business.
About 7 days after he returned to the US, he was at work, he started feeling uncomfortable. He was sweating profusely and an ambulance was called. He did not make it to the hospital. Painfully, he died!! He had DVT... in a plain language, he had blood clot(s) in his vein(s). This was caused by the long trip from the US to Nigeria. The clots were already formed in the veins in his leg, hence the pain. The clot(s) thereafter migrated to his lungs by which time it was too late to do anything. Sometimes, the clots could go to the brain or heart.
Surprisingly, the doctor he saw did not do a proper diagnosis, EVEN in America, someone would say.....hmmmm.
My friend, his sister, who is a pharmacist and her husband, a doctor both in the US, both regret amongst other things that he did not mention the leg pain to them at all even after arrival back to the US. Maybe they would have asked him to do a proper check....
I write this piece to encourage us to guide against DVT.
How???
1. When you are on a long flight, endeavour to walk around the plane and do stretching exercises at least every 2hrs.
2. Drink plenty of water on the flight.
3. Minimise alcohol consumption.
4. Wear compression socks while travelling.
5. According to research, one Aspirin 75mg tab daily, 3days before, during and 3days after arriving at destination will help to prevent DVT.
My husband and I just decided we need to get a pair each.
May God continue to protect and preserve us all, amen.
This is not fiction.... It happened the week ending Sat. Feb 24, 2018.
Please note that it is advisable that you take 70/75mg aspirin 24 hours before the trip, on the day of the trip and 24 hours after the trip can be helpful. This should be supplemented with periodic walking up and down the aisle as a form of exercise.
Trips on those long flights, (to Asia the US etc)should not be taken for granted. You may also remember that Prof Olikoye Ransome-Kuti made a short trip to Europe and he was found dead in his hotel room the following day.
Above all, for our aging group, periodic medical checkup, at least once a year, will be one stitch in time that can save 9 stitches.
